OXYGENCONSUMPTIONPREDICTIONMODELFORINDONESIANMALEWORKERS
Whiletheabilitytoassessworkersphysiologicalcostduringworkiscritical, appropriateevaluationmethodsspecificallydevelopedforIndonesianworkersarefairlyscarce.Thisisapreliminarytwo-phasestudyaimingatdevelopinganenergycostpredictionmodelfortheIndonesianmaleworkers.Inthefirstphase, themodelwasdevelopedbasedondatacollectedfromsixteenmaleworkers(20-25yearsofage).Bothanthropometricanddemographicdatawereobtainedpriortothecommencementoftheexperiment.Eachparticipantwaslateraskedtorunonatreadmillfor10minutesat25,50, and75%oftheindividualpeakrunningspeed,consecutively.HeartrateandO2consumptionweremeasuredthroughoutthedurationoftheexperiment,withmeansduringthelastminute(ofeachspeed)usedformodeldevelopment.Theenergycostpredictionmodelwaslaterestablished,inwhichO2consumption(inl/min)canbeexpressedasafunctionoftheindividualsheartrate,weight, andage.Theresultingmodelwasexaminedfurtherinthesecondphase,inwhichtheamountofoxygenconsumed(measureddirectly)wascomparedtothatpredictedbythemodel.Forthispurpose,10participants(maleworkersbetweentheagesof20-25yearsold)wererecruited.Theywereaskedtoperformtwodifferenttasksforfiveminuteseach,includingjoggingonthetreadmillatself-selectspeedorasimplemanualmaterialhandlingactivity.HeartrateandO2consumptionwerecontinuouslymeasuredduringthelastminuteofeachtask.Pairedt-testwasusedtoindicateifdifferencesexisted(p<0.05)betweendirectmeasurementofO2consumptionandthosedeterminedbythepredictionmodel.Resultsfromthissecondphaseshowedsignificantdifferencesduringthemanualmaterialhandlingactivity,butnotduringthejoggingactivity.Thedifferencescouldbeexplainedbythefactthat,comparedtotreadmillexercise, manualhandlingmayinvolvesubstantiallydifferentactivemusclegroups.ThisstudydemonstratedthatenergycostforalimitedsampleofIndonesianworkerscanbepredictedbyasimplelinearmodel, giventhattheindividualsheartrate,height, andageareknown.Theapplicabilityofthemodel,however,couldbehamperedifthecharacteristicsofthetasksbeingevaluatedaredifferentfromthosefoundduringjoggingtasks.However, theuseofthemodelasaroughestimateofdemandsduringindustrialactivitiescanstillbeofvalue.
