Combining occupational health data and ergonomics to take early action on Musculo Skeletal Disorders

When too many working situations make it impossible to carry out a regular and detailed analysis of each situation individually, is it possible to “Develop comprehensive approaches to guide prevention without reducing its objectives? (Volkoff, 2008). Since 2000, the occupational physicians of a large industrial group have been working in partnership with an occupational health research laboratory, setting up an observatory to track the health-work relationship among group employees by means of a questionnaire providing longitudinal follow-up. Every year, indicators are drawn up based on a statistical analysis of the responses to the questionnaire. Occupational health staff (physicians, ergonomists) can identify the employees affected by declining health, interview them and then propose an ergonomic study aimed at understanding and changing the work-related elements that caused them to report increasing osteoarticular problems. In this longitudinal multidisciplinary method, quantitative data obtained by questionnaires and qualitative data obtained by ergonomic analyses complement each other, making it possible to modify working conditions and reconcile retention of employees experiencing difficulty and company performance.
