The occurrence Of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Diseases (WRMD) in artisans in the Handcraft Production Center of Ponta Negra, Natal, Brazil: The reasons for not developing illness

The current work shows de results of a research developed in the Center of Handicraft Production in the Vila de Ponta Negra community in the city of Natal - RN, which aimed to investigate the reasons why a group of 13 craftswomen aged over 50 years old and who had been working for over 30 years showed such a low rate of WRMD -Work-Related Musculoskeletal Diseases though they develop a highly repetitive job with fast-paced hands and fingers movement, similar to the ones performed by computer typists. The methodology applied was based on Ergonomical Work Analysis (AET) together with conversational action analysis, placed observations and health analysis - anamnesis and physical tests. The counting of movements was performed from videos and observation in order to understand the movements done though the division of the work in cycles. The relevance of such work is to demonstrate how specific factors of the activity observed together with the work organization adopted are contrary to the classical model which relates the excessive moving of upper limbs to the occurrence of muscular and tendineal injuries.
