A Comparison of Trunk Posture Measurements: A Motion Capture System and a New Data-Logging Inclinometer

This study evaluates the accuracy of a pager-sized, portable data-logging inclinometer in quantifying back posture under various material handling tasks. Participants performed randomly-ordered lifts of three different heights and directions with four different loads. Data-logged inclinometer torso postural data was collected simultaneously and compared to motion capture system. Mean measurement errors were small (between -4.4°and 2.0°) and the results indicated a strong linear relationship and agreement between the two methods. This suggests that the portable data-logging inclinometer may be a good alternative for postural measurements in the field at a relatively low cost.
