Application of Biomechanics in a Small Manufacturing Facility: A Case Study

This case study documents the success of one small commercial lighting manufacturer that worked with a local university to build a fast response, reactive, early intervention ergonomics system. The system uses early symptom reporting by workers and prompt ergonomics interventions by a therapist and engineers to minimize expensive musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The application of this system in a manufacturing company showed that the system was highly effective in reducing work-related MSDs. Injury related costs were reduced by more than 95% during the systems first 3 years of operation. In addition to reducing injury related costs, the system showed a significant improvement in productivity of 10% each year since 2002.
