It is timely now to use Total Ergonomics Approach in Development Processes to Enhance the Quality of Life /Working Life of the People.
Recently we are still facing a lot of multidimensional impacts in using technology within the context of development process to attain the highest quality of life and working life of the people at large. Those impacts could be in form of Ergonomics -Occupational Safety and Health problems, environmental pollution and destruction, great impacts to sustainable development, high cost economy due to ineffective and inefficient conduct, more in term of turnkey development, less or no community participation, more top down in approach, in competitive products, various high risks working conditions and environment, intoxication, top down in approach full with liars, etc. Separate arrogant discipline and sector solution shall never completely solve the complex problems, yet could create new problems instead. A holistic and comprehensive solution is really and highly demanded to attain the expected solution. In the meantime, other demanded steps from various parties to realize sustainable development, environmental preservation, ISO regulation and various conducts must be run, etc., in fact due to various circumstances could not be done fully and ended with more serious impacts as consequences. Steps with short term gains mind set shall destruct more the condition and situation. And coordination weakness and poor law enforcement shall add the situation. Yet the in holistic thinking and act owned by the decision makers shall make the impacts more seriously occurring. As far as concern and commitment is not there, the condition and situation shall become worse and worse. Ergonomists and Ergonomics association must enhance their role and function, not satisfy enough with jumping from one to other enterprises to improve their working condition and environment only, but must be competence to handle more various colossal topics with more people involved and to be managed. Disasters among others must becoming ergonomists and ergonomic association concern and commitment. Nor to say the construction of various public utilities used by various people with their different characteristics. To meet those demands, they must be ready to change, having new mind set, ready to work with different discipline integrative and holistically, avoid ego, arrogant attitude. Total Ergonomics approach with its SHIP (Systemic, Holistic, Interdisciplinary and participatory) and Appropriate Technology approaches in which the technology should be assessed comprehensively through six criteria namely it should be technically, economically, ergonomically and social culturally sound, safe energy and preserve or not destructing the environment are having all those characteristics. Human capital investment, among others capable to think and act holistically, carrying out human relation, working in a team, becoming important prerequisite to make the approach successful.
