The Research on Work-related Social Support and Work-Life Balance in the Nursing

Recently, the establishments of the support systems such as maternity leave and child-care leave for Work-Life Balance (WLB) have increased in Japan. In the case of nurse, many of them continue working after marriage. However, it is pointed out that they have difficulty in balancing work with life because of working irregular shifts. Recent research indicates that, as an adviser of the nurses, colleague or boss is significant source of support about the problems at work. Furthermore, it is reported that work-related social support is effective in reducing stress, so it can be expected to keep WLB. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between WLB and work-related social support in the nursing organization. As a result, poor communication influences the work-related stress (p<0.01) and retirement (p<0.05) negatively for human-relations at the workplace. Moreover, in cases of communicating better with colleague or boss, they have a tendency to find fulfillment in the work or life positively. As for consultation system of nursing, 52 percent of the respondents answered they could talk freely about nursing technology and patients at the workplace, 55 percent answered they could exchange information about nursing technology and patients actively. Talking with willingness at the workplace influences job satisfaction (p<0.05) positively. As for the operation of the support systems for the balancing of work and family, 30 percent of the respondents answered they didnt know the existence of the support system. Therefore, it is necessary to familiarize nurses with their system. Moreover, for keeping WLB, many of nurses want to introduce systems such as appropriate number of staff, refreshment holiday, career development or technical training, in addition to the above-mentioned support systems for the balancing of work and family. Therefore, it is necessary to enrich work-related social support such as how to communicate at work, the role of boss, launching a counseling room and well-known support system.
