COMPUTER DESK BASED ON SHIP APPROACH DESIGN REDUCING FATIGUE AND MSD, INCREASING WORK PRODUCTIVITY OF STUDENT DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN FSRD ISI DENPASAR

Desk as part of workstation is the place of monitor, keyboard, mouse, center procerssor unit (CPU) and others. Desks which are used by students of department of design in computer laboratory of Faculty of Fine Art and Design (FSRD) Indonesian Institute of Art (ISI) Denpasar, have standard dimensions of height is 29.53, 17.72 wide and 35.43 length. Mean and standard deviation (SD) of fatigue, MSD, workload and work productivity in standard desk computer is 58·28 ± 7·63, 45·29 ± 6·01, 17·55 ± 0·70/ppm and 0·45 ± 0·08/h respectively. An improvement effort being carried out must be resulted working condition for healthy, comfort and productive. To minimize fatigue, MSD, workload and increasing work productivity of that students, computer desk based on SHIP approach design becoming the choice of solution. The height of computer desk should be as closed as possible with the anthropometry dimension of student, will be divided into three categories i.e. small (S) and medium (M) and large (L) such as in fashion ways. The distance of monitor could be changed by appropriate technology which is built-in within the computer desk, to minimize the static of work-posture. The variation of work-posture and workload is beneficial to health, especially in proper recovery of muscles is believed to be of crucial importance for avoiding disorders. The investigation of this computer desk was carried out on July - August 2008, in computer laboratory of Department of Design FSRD ISI Denpasar with eighteen volunteer students involved in this research. They work on computer desk standard four days and after wash-out two days respectively, then they work again on computer desk by SHIP approach design for four days. The height of computer desk which is fit with anthropometry of the users and the position of monitor could be changed continuously, reduction of fatigue, MSD, workload and increasing work productivity about 30·83%, 26·36%, 17·15% and 53·33% respectively. We hope there are many scientists shall investigated the computer desk by another ways, and there are companies that interested to produce this product.
