Machine-related fatalities

The machine safety directive 1998/37/EC lays down the essential health and safety requirements for machines in EU and EFTA areas. A machine fulfilling the health and safety requirements, the documentation requirements and the marking requirements can be marketed and used freely within the EU and EFTA nations. The current machine safety directive has been revised and the new directive 2006/42/EC will come into force at the end of 2009. The revision renders the machine safety design and the conformance assessment topical. In this study, real accident data about machine-related fatal occupational accidents are analysed. The aims of this study are: 1) to identify the machine-related fatal accidents, 2) to analyse which essential health and safety requirements are related to the fatal accidents, and 3) to find out whether the number of machine-related fatalities has decreased or not. The study is based on the fatal occupational accidents in Finland during the years 1985-2007. A total of 754 fatal occupational accidents occurred in Finland in that period and 296 out of the 754 fatal accidents were connected with machines. Mobile machines and lifting machines together with conveyors and machines for lifting persons were the most fatal machines. The machine safety directive has not affected significantly the number of machine related fatal occupational accidents.
