The Role of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Technology Adoption
The rapid rate of innovation in consumer technologies presents many challenges for individuals from the perspective of technology adoption and usage. While Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) play a critical role in the design and evolution of consumer technologies, the process of technology adoption (i.e. the uptake and usage of technology) has received surprisingly little attention from our discipline. The goal of this paper is to articulate the issues and identify opportunities for HF/E intervention. These issues include: the ability of individuals to cope with the increasing penetration of new technologies into the full range of daily activities; the relationship between usability and usage; and the impact of technology literacy, learning styles and training, and generational differences on technology adoption. HF/E expertise in areas such as learning, individual differences, and macroergonomics gives HF/E professionals the basis for enabling more people to take advantage of the social, economic, and convenience benefits associated with using technology.
