Emergences of the agencies in the regional learning network

The primary interest of this study is to explore the process of emergence and transformation of human agency, transformation of identity and the process of construc ting the mediating artifact of human agentive action. The study is carried out in the context of regional learning networks developmental activity in which internal change agents, so-called in-house developers, take initiatives to develop their own work place work systems and activities. Theoretically this work relies on cultural-historical activity theory. The source of individual agency is seen in a persons capability to use external artifacts to control her or his own behaviour and to transform a given frame of action and to break away from the presumed frame of identity. Agency is defined as individuals-operating-with-mediational-means (Wertsch & Tulviste, 1992, 555). In this study I maintain that intellectual identification and analysis of the significant inner contradiction of the work activity is crucial for an individual only after being transformed into a sign for agentive action in an individual signification process. I argue that an individual subject needs to make a personal and emotionally-coloured relation to any perceived sign before it can be transformed into a tool for breaking away from a presumed frame of identity and reconstructing her or his identity. I also argue that when development takes place in solving identity dilemmas it comes close to what Engestr(o)m (1999) calls a new mentality.
