Inflatable Mannequin for Testing Thermal Properties of Clothing

A low-cost inflatable mannequin capable of testing the thermal properties of clothing has been developed through an international collaborative effort. The new system provides a simple method for quantitatively assessing convective and evaporative heat loss from the body in both stationary and dynamic configurations. The mannequin is mounted on a support frame, equipped with a positive pressure air circulation fan including internal and external ducts, a variable heating unit, and digital electronic air temperature sensors. Clothing insulation and ventilation is determined by comparing the heat energy input required in order to maintain an internal 39C (core) air temperature for a standing, seminude, configuration under 20℃ ambient air temperature condition. Sweating is simulated by irrigating the mannequin body with warm water at 37℃.
