Measurement of safety distances in reaching upward and over protective structures defined in ISO 13857
International standard ISO 13857:2008 establishes values for safety distances in industrial and public environments to prevent machinery hazard zones from being reached by the upper and lower limbs. The purpose of this study was to measure precise reach distances of Japanese subjects in reaching upward and over protective structures defined in ISO13857 and to examine if the reach distances provided in ISO13857 were acceptable for Japanese population. Two types of reaching motion (reaching upward (RUP) and reaching over a protective structure (ROP) ) for 13 young Japanese males were three-dimensionally measured by a motion capturing system in order to calculate reach distances. In RUP, measured reach distances were smaller than that provided in ISO 13857:2008. Several measured reach distances in ROP, however, were larger than those provided in ISO 13857:2008.
