Survey of accident frequency rate changes current in Pars khodro co.With using chart control method

Every year millions of work related accidents happen in the world. These accidents might cause death, major disabilities, or minor disabilities. None of the work related accidents should be underestimated because even a minor disability might affect a persons life for many months. It is essential for an organization to have a good control over the quality of the programs that are designed for accident prevention, and health and safety promotion. Management specialists believe that only 15% of health and safety related problems in a work place can be controlled or fixed by general staff, while the rest (85%) should be prevented by practicing appropriate safety management strategies in the organizations. Investigating the underlying causes of workplace accidents in an industry can be helpful for evaluation of the health and safety programs in an organization. This means that specific accidents in similar situations can be prevented. It will also reduce the direct and indirect financial damages to the national industry and its consequences. The Control Charts are appropriate tools for investigating the effectiveness of health and safety programs. Basically a Control Chart shows positive and negative changes of a variable within a specific period of time. The accident rates for each month are calculated in this method, using the statistics of accidents during 1384 and 1385 and workers work hours in those years. To find a manageable number, all rates are multiplied by a large factor (in this case 200,000). The resulted number is indeed the accident rate distribution. Finally, the “safe distance was calculated by calculating standard deviation. Then, the accident rate with 5% safety level was drawn using upper limits, lower limits, and average of the control chart. Using the control chart resulted from the accident rate for 1384 and 1385 that was drawn for this company, the accident rate at the end of each month was calculated and evaluated. In cases of observing the positive outcomes, the company safety procedures were evaluated as positive and the same procedure would be continued. But if the result was negative, the procedures for those months had to be reviewed and changed. The final report at the end of the year showed that the accident rates in the first two months of the year (Farvardin & Ordibehesht) were at the upper control limit (UCL). This indicates the unusual physical or management procedures in the organization. The accident rates were less than average for all other months of the year except for July (Tir). This explains why the lower control limit was reduced. These results show the effectiveness of the set of actions and safety procedures/plans implemented to reduce accidents. With advancement of these programs during the year, we can observe the reduction of accident rate in the organization. When using the control chart, the ideal situation in safety evaluation would be the time that the accident rate is between the average and lower control limit. As mentioned, this was the situation that we observed for most months in the drawn control chart. This is another indicator of improving the safety situation in the organization.
