Safety Management in Amusement Parks

Safety is a particularly important issue in amusement parks. Risks concerning amusement parks are often seen as bigger than they really are. Nevertheless, several accidents and hazardous situations have occurred recently in different amusement parks. In the literature, the emphasis is on ride and rider safety. In the present study amusement park safety management is studied in order to establish the current situation and to identify possibilities for improvement. Both occupational and customer safety are considered. Methods used are observation, safety analysis of selected rides, interviews and a questionnaire survey. The results of interviews and questionnaires show that employee competence is one of the most important factors affecting both occupational and customer safety. The most important practices for maintaining and improving safety were found to be in education, introduction and guidance, and training. These were also emphasized as important targets for improving safety in amusement parks.
