Online tools for the assessment of occupational stress and risks
The integration of scientific ergonomic knowledge into effective ergonomic assessment of work is still in deficit. Often, scientific literature does not find the way to the operational participants of occupational safety and health or are classified by them as more or less uninteresting. Since the middle of the 90s, the ASER Institute places simply applicable web-based tools for the assessment of occupational stress and risks in the World Wide Web. The web-based tools are developed based on scientific findings derived from own research projects on the one hand and the state of the art of the technology and the scientific literature on the other hand. To receive a high quality standard, the OSHA “guidelines of good practice information on the internet were adapted. This means for example that the tools are presented in a very transparent way, informing the user who has developed the underlying method and who has developed the software. In addition, a responsible contact person and the included literature are listed. Naturally, the download of these instruments is free of charge. By now, 17 online tools have been developed and published, covering the topics of e.g. working at visual display terminals, calculation and assessment of vibration, heat, noise, lightning, work related metabolic rate, lifting, holding, carrying, pulling and pushing of heavy loads. The tools are available in German, and partly also in English, French and Russian language (www.institut-aser.de). Besides enquiries about these web-based tools from many companies, a lot of scientific organisations, social partners and public administrations refer to these tools as Good Practice or even Best Practice tools. Therefore, this transfer concept seems to be very helpful in practical use.
