Slips, Trips and Falls in the UK Electricity Networks Sector – Analysis of 5 Years Data

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is the UK trade association for the UK energy transmission and distribution operators. ENA facilitates a framework of committees which address a wide range of safety, occupational health and environmental issues. One of these groups, the Safety, Health and Environment Managers Group has been analyzing safety provided by ENA member companies to drive improvements n managing risks. The definition of an accident is often given as an ‘unplanned, uncontrolled event which has the potential to cause a loss of some kind. In the past, data has been collected based on the ‘outcome of the event, i.e. a fatality or lost time accident. For the past five years data has been collected by the SHE Managers Group for ‘loss or potential loss making events. The difference between an unplanned event being a ‘near miss or a ‘fatality is generally determined by the term ‘luck, what is important is that improvements are made to stop the unplanned event. Rather than producing a year end “Annual Safety Report which can be regarded as a “league table, data are now captured continuously via a web-based system and are monitored by the SHE Managers Group on a quarterly basis. Initially, all injury events have been captured, including those that did not cause lost time. Employee and contractor data are collated but initially the quarterly monitoring has concentrated on ‘employee data.
