A Study on Features of Athlete Burnout from the Perspective of Sports Team Organization in Japan
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of team organization on athlete burnout through the verification of the hypothesis that “some different types of athlete burnout processes were observed among sports team organizations. For this purpose, we understood burnout process from the viewpoint of a series of its moderators; the melancholic type of personality (TM), stressors, coping behaviors, and athlete burnout reactions. For this purpose, we administered a questionnaire investigation to 1033 Japanese university athletes belonging to 48 various kinds of sports teams. The questionnaire was composed of the Depression Related Personality Scale, Daily and Competitive Stressor Scale, Modified-COPE, and Athlete Burnout Questionnaire. In the analysis, we carried out a cluster analysis using the above scales variables. As the results, we found five clusters having different features of burnout process from the 48 teams and our hypothesis was considered to be supported. Hence, it was at least indicated that clarifying the effects of team organization is also important for understanding the athlete burnout process in detail.
