Does French early driving training improve behaviours of novice drivers confronted to simulated unezpected events

To contribute to the fight against the over-involvement of novice drivers in road accidents, France has instituted the possibility for early driving training at 16 years old. To determine whether this early driver training enables novice to adopt safe behaviour, we compare the behaviour of young drivers having followed early driver training or traditional training to the behaviour of experienced drivers. We selected prototypical accident scenarios and introduced them into our driving simulator. Participants had to drive normally. Dependent variables were response time (brake) and lateral position of the vehicle. Results provided a very detailed analysis of behaviours. Such scenarios could be used to improve driver education, enabling novice drivers to be confronted with ranges of risky situations rarely encountered in natural environments.
