Retrofitting lighting installations:Consequences for environment, health and human factors

Increasing energy prices and the awareness of the effect of increased emission of greenhouse gasses on the environment, have motivated efforts to develop new energy efficient lighting systems. However, to be acceptable the lighting system should also assure individual health, well-being, safety and performance. This study investigates these aspects by implementing new luminaires and a new lighting control system in a large hospital building in Norway. Different types of installations were implemented and both technical values and psychological effects were tracked before and after the installation. The results showed reduced energy consumption and a reduction in subjectively perceived symptoms. Broken down by symptom clusters, the reduction in complaints was most pronounced for visual symptoms and musculoskeletal symptoms. No effect was observed for job-specific aspects of well-being.
