Impact of Ergonomics Good Practices Database as Public Relations Tools

The Japan Ergonomics Society Public Relations Committee started running the web site of the “Ergonomics Good Practices Database in early June, 2008, as part of its activities to spread information and enlighten people about ergonomics and its contribution to society. Various examples of good practices are provided by people such as JES members, company product developers and occupational safety and health practitioners. Not only professional ergonomists, but also the public especially consumers and students can see and learn ergonomically designed products and practices on the web. There are three sections in the Ergonomics Good Practices Database. “Ergonomic Design section is mainly related to examples of product design and development for both hardware and software. Some examples are ballpoint pens that are easy to grip, system kitchens with human movements taken into account, accessible web designs for persons with disabilities and software products based on the human-centered design. “Ergonomic Good Practices section is mainly for cases of ergonomic improvement and good practices at workplaces. Cases such as improvement of working condition and environment to make workplaces comfortable and safe, universal access to transportation and public facilities, human-error management for patient safety are included. Finally, “Ergonomic Guidelines section provides examples of practical ergonomic tools for risk evaluation that practitioners can use at work sites, and checklists to evaluate the accessibility that can be used by designers and developers in the designing process. In the present study, we investigated the impact of the Ergonomics Good Practices Database, especially focusing on the features of its application to ergonomic education at enterprises and universities. The results suggest that the ergonomic program devised using the Ergonomics Good Practices Database is an effective tool not only to enlighten people about ergonomic knowledge and good practices, but also to enhance participants awareness of the importance of ergonomic points of view.
