VIDEO ASSISTED TRAINING AS A TOOL FOR PREVENTION: THE NURSES CASE
The main objective of our study is to educate the staff to gestures and postures techniques. Our method consisted in: · An observation of the nursing staff real activity to track down adopted postures during various phases of work activity and the respective time for every category of activity, · A training of gesture and posture techniques for staff based on a theoretical musculoskeletal anatomical-physiological review and a video projection of specific films on the gestures techniques. · A post-training observations of the real activity to estimate the impact of the gesture education on the work and to see if there is a significant change of adopted postures. During the preliminary analysis, a first report was made: the majority of the staff stayed in an upright position, making an effort of flexion with light rotation to take filters and artery-venous line placed at a lower level. This gesture was repeated several times a day. Also, beds were placed at a lower level than the nurseˇs body and that obliged them to bend her/his body. After the training, results show that there is an important decrease of postures up tilted. If we look at this decrease with regard to the categories of activity, we note that: · 30 up tilted postures were spent in upright or sitting postures during the phase of preparation of the machine, · 95 up tilted postures were spent in upright or sitting postures during the patient connection phase, · 55 up tilted postures were spent in upright or sitting postures during the patient disconnection phase. During these educational sessions, the nursing staff proposed that the training should be frequent and the film should be viewed on the workplace several times. Exchange among the operators on the planned techniques was frequently noticed during projection sessions. This collective exchange of ideas went beyond criticisms and comparisons to propose solutions of the problems: · To reinforce the training by other sessions · To fit out the job such as minimize the number of beds. · To change if possible the equipment especially adjustable beds. The actions of prevention have to go inevitably through information and adequate training and through prevention based on the ergonomic conception of the job. These prevention actions would be effective only if they are based on a good knowledge of the main individual and occupational risk factors.
