Research on On-Board Driver Drowsiness Detection Based on Driver’s Steering Performance

This paper presents a method for the on-board detection of driver drowsiness by using the information of the drivers steering behavior. A real road driving experiment had been conducted to collect data containing different levels of drowsy driving. By analyzing the steering wheel data, two measures (Percentage of Non-Steering (PNS), and Standard Deviation of Steering Wheel Angle (SDA)) were found to be significantly different under different drowsiness levels, and thus were introduced into a linear model of drowsiness prediction. The validation results suggest that the proposed method which is solely based on the drivers steering performance could reach a successful drowsiness detection of about 83%.
