Principles supporting users’ creativity in HCI: a Taiwanese perspective

E-learning has been playing an important role worldwide, including the applications of employee trainings and various stages of education. Meanwhile, Ministry of Education in Taiwan also launches a series of creativity programs trying to spread creativity nationwide. It is implied that integrating computer into creativity education may be a major issue in the future. Nevertheless, research which has documented that link between computer and creativity is scant. In terms of Human Computer Interface (HCI), this study attempts to formulate principles and guidelines of HCI that might support users creativity while they are performing a variety of tasks on websites. A review of literature on creativity and HCI was initially conducted to identify tentative principles and guidelines. Delphi technique was implemented to collect congruent views on this issue from 13 professionals in Taiwan. Delphi panel was composed of nine scholars as well as four professionals in the field of HCI. These experts were asked to contribute their opinions during the three-round Delphi process and rate the importance of the guidelines on Five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using mean scores, standard deviations and mode to determine whether the consensus was achieved among panelists. After the first round in Delphi process, this Delphi study provides an aggregation of these opinions and garners rudimentary principles to support creativity on website activities. Six major tentative principles with 64 associated guidelines were identified at present, which are: (1) Support exploration and 11 guidelines were identified; (2) Consider users from various background and 6 guidelines were concluded. (3) Value feedback and revision and 10 guidelines were discovered; (4) Provide an easy database for history keeping and searching and 7 guidelines were defined; (5) Reduce the cognitive load and 17 guidelines were recognized; (6) Visually satisfying web design and function and 13 guidelines were clarified.
