Consortium Pooled Data Job Physical Ezposure Assessment

NIOSH consortium members reported that many workers in the consortium cohorts performed jobs where physical exposure variables such as force and posture varied significantly during a job cycle. Further, the workers often rotated to two or more jobs. Most job analysis methods are currently designed to evaluate mono-task jobs where the job only consists of performing one type of task and the worker does not rotate between different jobs. To address these complex physical exposures at the worker level, the consortium is considering several job analysis methods including (a) weighting of individual job exposure parameters (such as hand force, hand/wrist postures for an entire work shift) along with combination job exposure parameters (such as forceful exertion together with awkward postures for a worker during a day), (b) modifying pre-existing risk assessment methods (SI and TLV for Hand Activity) to account for exposure from different tasks and jobs, and (c) a new CTS risk index to establish job physical exposure for an entire work shift.
