MAPO indez for risk assessment of patient manual lifting

In 1996, EPM Research Unit started a study to assess risk from patient manual handling in hospital and geriatric institution wards. The aim was assessing risk from patient manual handling in a working sector with a high number of exposed subjects, mainly females, a high prevalence of lumbar spine disorders and an equally high number of subjects with reduced working capability (due to spine diseases), difficult to be managed for the negative impact on work organization. The MAPO method considers the following main factors which all together characterize occupational exposure: patient care load produced by the presence of disabled patients, type and degree of disability of the patients, structural aspects of the working environment and the wards, equipment installed and training of staff on the specific topic In 1999 and later in 2002 two multicentre cross-studies were conducted in 90 hospitals (for acute and chronic patients), 419 wards and approx 6,900 exposed subjects. The study of MAPO index and acute low back pain association allowed to set three exposure ranges following the well-known light traffic model: for MAPO index values in the 0.5 to 1.5 range, the risk can be considered to be absent or negligible, for values in the 1.51 to 5.00 range, the risk can be considered as moderate and for MAPO index values exceeding 5.00, the risk can be considered to be high. At present, the methodology is proposed for all hospital areas: wards. operating theatre, outpatient service, day hospital, etc, following ISO standards for risk assessment, and also risk estimate using a simplified screening procedure allowing to quickly identify critical points to be focused in view of a prioritized preventive plan.
