3D dynamic analysis of breast without and with a sports bra
Background Sports bras have the functions of supporting the breast and absorbing breast shock during activities. However, three dimensional movement characteristics of the breasts during activities are not known well without or with a sports bra. A better understanding breast movement is required for the future-development of optimal sports bras to prevent breast injury and increase breast comfort. Objective This study aimed to investigate three dimensional movement characteristics of the breasts by analyzing breast velocity, and to discuss the factors restraining breast movement. Methods In the study, 3 healthy females were invited to perform 3 different activities (walking, running and stepping) under braless and a sports bra conditions. Three dimensional trajectories of 10 markers were obtained with a 6-camera Vicon motion capturing system with a sampling frequency of 60 Hz. The breast velocities in three directions were proposed as the main parameters for analyzing breast movement. Results The breast movement was a complicated 3D space movement and its velocity was smaller in a sports bra condition than in naked condition. The magnitude of velocity was obviously different in different directions, positions and activities. The design features such as the sling of the bra cup could significantly influence breast movement. Conclusion Females should wear an appropriate sports bra to reduce the intensity of breast movement. The designers of sports bra should consider controlling the breast movement not only in the vertical direction but also in the anterior-posterior and the medial-lateral directions, and breast positions and performing activities.
