Ergonomics in the South African Mining Industry
For the major part of the previous century, ergonomics research in the South African mining industry primarily focused on the capabilities and limitations of individuals in performing physical work in conditions typical of gold mining, as well as on the design of selection criteria to assess fitness for work on the basis of an individuals physical attributes. The results of an industry-wide risk assessment indicated that poor ergonomics and the lack of a strategy for introducing ergonomics into the South African mining industry were major contributing factors to work-related injury, and health and safety risks. In view of a growing awareness of the need for ergonomics, an ergonomics implementation strategy and a concomitant research programme have been developed for the South African mining industry.
