Rough Set Model and its Application to Kansei Product Design

This paper proposes a rough set based method for extracting Kansei decision rules which we can use to examine design candidates satisfying customers kansei or wants. The interactions and ambiguity are also pervasive features of kansei. In this respect, by using rough set method, we will obtain more significant information on the interactive relations between customer wants and kansei words, product design attributes and kansei, and so on. We applied the proposed method to ball pen design. Kansei evaluation experiment executed in which 24 female students evaluated 27 different ball pens in terms of 40 kansei SD measurements including customers want, ‘attractive. By using the proposed hierarchical rough set method, we identified customers wants as well as developmental concepts and design attributes to actualize customers wants. As a result, we found out different design attributes based on three different decision rule evaluation measures, support, effects and combined score.
