Occupational accidents with movement disturbance: in support of an operational definition

Falls on the level remain frequent and serious occupational accidents (OA). The terminology used to describe these accidents is varied and somewhat inaccurate. Moreover it does not integrate the variety of accidents encountered and listed under the different terms used. The advantage of considering an occupational accident category embracing accidents with movement disturbance (AMD) is demonstrated based on extracts from various OA accounts. A model is then proposed for AMDs: accidents in which injury results often from unexpected creation of a hazard due to casual association between the victims disturbed movement energy and a physical element, made injury-causing by its properties and subsequently termed a “circumstantial hazard. Finally, the reasoning behind AMD classification is explained. In particular, it would appear that prevention focusing on risk, stricto sensu, is difficult, even impossible, in AMD cases. Prevention implemented at the source of the risk would therefore seem to represent the only feasible solution.
