OPTIMIZING THE SEALING PROCESS OF A PAPERBOARD PACKAGE
The importance of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is growing rapidly. By using MAP the selling time of a food product can be significantly lengthened without using preservatives. Longer selling time reduces the logistic costs and CO2-emissions caused by the product.MAP causes strict tightness requirements to the sealing process of the package. The most critical sealing factors of a plastic coated paperboard package are sealing time, sealing pressure and sealing temperature. Additionally, a deciding factor is the surface quality of the sealing area. Unsuccessful sealing causes leaks in the package. This causes unwanted changes in the modified atmosphere and thus the food to contaminate prematurely. In this work the optimal sealing parameters for a paperboard package are defined and presented. This optimization is an efficient way to reduce the cycle time of the sealing and generate cost advantage to the packaged product.
