A MODEL FOR SELECTION OF MATERIALS. AN INTEGRATED TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL MODEL ON WEAR RESISTANT STEELS
Selection of materials for design and structures is an activity which will influence the economic and ecologic performance of many different commercial processes. Steel is generally considered a traditional material. A lot of performance data and general experience has been gathered. These vast sources on the performance of steel opens for more advanced attempts to extend the applicability of components to new and more demanding conditions and environments. In the Supply Chain, from Steel Production to Component Fabrication and over to End Users of components, different understanding of Material Properties and Terminology is retarding the communication process and the pace of improvements in efficiency. The Authors have developed a Materials Evaluation Method with a generality in terminology suited for most partners in the Supply Chain. This model is based on both a Technical and an Economical Part. By switching the communication from the traditional Technological Material Properties to more Applied Technological Properties, related to the material and the applied situation, a more common ground for communication has been produced. By further introducing commonly acceptable Economical Assessment Methods, the Performance of the alternative Components can be compared in a more commercial context. This special model is developed and tested to assess Wear Resistant Materials subjected to Sliding Abrasion. Some examples are shown and discussed. This topic has previously been discussed from various perspectives in ICPR 12, 15-19 Conferences.
