INTEGRATING SUPPLIER SELECTION IN OPTIMAL PRODUCT FAMILY DESIGN
Product family design and supplier selection are traditionally separated in two successive stages: product development team determines the optimal levels of product components for each product variants of a product family, and then purchase unit chooses the qualified suppliers with lowest cost. However, the decoupling of these two decision processes may lead to suboptimal solutions with regard to the total market profit of a company. In this paper, an unified product family design optimization model integrating supplier selection is established to maximize the total profit in a multi-segment market. Consumer purchase behavior, market cannibalization, supplier availability and ordering cost are considered in the model. An evolutionary algorithm is developed to solve the proposed model. Finally, an example of integrating product family design and supplier selection is given.
