THE EFFECTS OF PLATFORM-BASED DESIGN PROCESS ON THE DESIGN OF A COMPLEX PRODUCT

The purpose of this paper is to study a platform-based design process of a complex product and specifically its impacts on the design schedule. The paper is based on the constructive research approach, where benefits found in theory construction will be analyzed through a case study, which uses a cruiser as an example of a complex product. The main aim for platform-based design in this case is to reuse the information from previous projects to gain clearer and faster design process. The analysis shows that an effective platform-based design process requires commitment to the use of common modules and systems found in the product platform. Based on the case study, platform-based design could shorten the design time and bring cost savings throughout the whole manufacturing process. The single case study provides an interesting in-depth case study to the topic, but also leaves room for further studies of the platform-based design processes of complex products in multiple types of industries.
