GROUP TECHNOLOGY: BURBIDGE RE-VISITED

This paper analyses the existing knowledge base on group technology and on production flow analysis. It identifies the theories that make the foundation for this study. The report then investigates specific subject theory on group technology based on an exploratory research at company level. The aim of the report is to investigate the operational efficiency given the changes to Dyynateqs shop floor layout; according to principles of group technology. It was identified that the process route number technique to be outdated and hence sourced an alternative clustering analysis to analyse Dyynateqs production system. The clustering analysis portrayed the existence of product families and process groups at Dyynateq that would enable redesigning the production system to that of a group layout.
