CHALLENGES OF VIRTUALITY FOR SMES
This paper discusses the concept of virtual enterprise (VE) as an inter-company collaborative organizational form for innovation. In this paper, we examine how SMEs would benefit from collaboration, externalising as the VE concept. Hence, we investigate their possibilities to collaborate and build the VE consisting of independent SMEs. We approach the research topic with a conceptual-theoretical view and with a case study of 14 SMEs. We also aim to build scenarios how to develop VE in the SME context and give recommendations for future development. Implementing advanced ICT systems, such as ERP systems, in the VE concept is an entirely different preposition than implementing an ERP system in a single enterprise environment. Collaborative enterprises have to integrate between their ERP packages and other applications such as legacy systems and e-commerce sites. In this paper, we identify various issues and challenges that may arise for ERP implementation in VE context.
