COMMON BARRIERS TO LEAN IMPLEMENTATION - PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES AND THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS -
In todays business environment many companies react to turbulent conditions with the implementation of a lean production system (LPS). An LPS offers a holistic strategy to eliminate waste in processes, to achieve high product und process quality and to reduce lead times. In order to implement a successful LPS it is not only sufficient to possess knowledge of methods and tools for production optimization. In fact most LPS underperform because further aspects of the implementation are not considered. The goal of this paper is to describe the most common barriers to LPS implementation based on practical experiences as well as the causes for these barriers. Besides the knowledge of lean-methods aspects like leadership, planning, organization structure and enterprise-culture have to be taken into consideration during the implementation. Furthermore some approaches to cope with the common barriers of LPS implementation will be shown.
