THE IMPACT OF INFORMATION SHARING IN SUPPLY CHAINS HAVING POISSON DEMAND

Information sharing in a supply chain is an important issue in order to have major impact on minimizing the bullwhip effect, minimizing individual organization or global supply chain costs, and improving customer service level, as discussed in theory and studied in practice. In order to measure the information sharing impact, two models were considered: the first, an environment with no information sharing where the supplier is required to decide when to start production considering initial properties, and second, an environment having information sharing where the supplier surveys the retailers inventory level at each period and where each decides to start production or not. The main goal of the supplier is to minimize his costs of inventory holding and shortage penalty. The supply chain environment analyzed was a simple twoechelon chain, having a single retailer and single supplier who supply unique items in a constant order size, while the customers demands arrive in a Poisson distribution. In order to measure this impact numerically, simulation with varied environment parameters was made and resulted in a mean impact of 16% savings in the suppliers costs of inventory holding and shortage penalty.
