SUPPLY CHAIN FLEXIBILITY ENABLERS AND THEIR RELATED PROACTIVE APPROACHES
Increasing global competition, accelerating technological change and expanding customer expectations are creating a turbulent environment. Flexibility is a mechanism that enables firms to respond to this increasing uncertainty in supply and demand. Meanwhile, some approaches proactively reduce the need for flexibility or delimit its increase, or even relax the constraints for other such approaches. The paper builds a framework that integrates the relationships among supply chain flexibility enablers, their contextual factors and approaches to eliminate these factors. It builds a theoretical foundation for developing and testing linkages among these constructs both empirically and mathematically. It should help managers identify the flexibility enablers and elimination approaches fitting given contextual factors and performance goals.
