INVENTORY RATIONING AND SHIPMENT SCHEDULE IN VENDOR-MANAGED INVENTORY SYSTEM

This paper addresses a vendor-managed inventory system including one vendor and multiple retailers, which are distinguished by their waiting costs. The vendor replenishes its inventory from an outside supplier, and ships them to the retailers with deterministic demands. In such setting, this study proposes an analytical model to coordinate the inventory rationing and shipment decisions, then proves the existence of decision variables that optimize the integrated decision, and finds their closed form expressions by simplifing the given rationing policy. Furthermore, compared with the policy without rationing, it demonstrates that the rationing policy can not only increase the profits through improving the fillrate of the profitable customer, but can also save the transportation costs through shipment consolidation. Finally, some numerical results are presented to show the impact of rationing on the system.
