SOLE VERSUS MULTIPLE SOURCING STRATEGIES WITH BUYER CAPACITY CONSTRAINT
This paper develops a multiple-sourcing inventory system under stochastic lead times controlled by a continuous review, reorder point, order quantity inventory policy. The order quantity is equally split between a numbers of suppliers. The buyer capacity constraint is also included into the model. We develop a new approach for obtaining the exact cost functions based on dividing each cycle time to some ranges. The objective is to minimize the expected total cost per unit time by determining the reorder point and the order quantity. A solution procedure is suggested for solving the proposed model and numerical examples are used to illustrate the benefits of multiple-sourcing over sole-sourcing strategy. The numerical results show that increasing the number of suppliers is more attractive in competitive and/or uncertain situations where shortage cost is high and/or lead time is more variable.
