OPTIMIZATION OF THE PURCHASING PROCESS IN A DRILLING COMPANY
This paper shows how the purchasing process for a drilling company was optimized. There are bottlenecks in the process which are troublesome because they delay, amongst others, the purchase of materials needed to repair the machines and the operation can stop. The objective is to reduce, as much as possible, the average time in the system of a material requirement (MR) without having to invest a significant amount of money to solve the problem. The solution doesnt suggest modifications involving firing or hiring new people. Instead, it revises and restructures the way in which some processes take place. The reality and alternative structure were simulated using Arena from Rockwell Software. The recommendations provided in this investigation are the outcome of analyzing the results of the initial simulation with people that have worked for the company for years and know the processes thoroughly. The company is expected to save over $1.400.000 USD annually by implementing the changes.
