EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF A LOOK-AHEAD WINDOW IN FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS

The look-ahead window holds data about future jobs. The affect of system parameters on the influence of the look-ahead window on flexible manufacturing system performance was evaluated for inseparable significantly different systems with up to four machines. The systems parameters were derived from the number of product types in the system: the mean and variance of product types per machine. System performance was evaluated using mean manufacturing lead time, its internal variability and machine utilization. Results indicate that the size of the look-ahead window and tested system parameters influence system performance significantly.
