A unified approach to analysis and design of networked and quantized control systems
Control of systems over channels with capacity constraints is currently attracting a lot of attention due to a range of emerging control applications, such as drive-by-wire vehicles and fly-by-wire aircraft. In such systems, the control loop is closed via a channel that can transfer a finite amount of data per unit of time which imposes communication constraints that can not be ignored in analysis and design. Roughly speaking, the networked induced imperfections and constraints can be categorized in three types: (i) variable transmission delays, different sampling intervals and possible loss of packets; (ii) quantization errors in all the signals transmitted over the network due to the finite length of the packets; (iii) communication constraints caused by the sharing of the network by multiple nodes and the fact that only one node is allowed to transmit its packet per transmission.
