Theoretical model for pigmentation pattern formation in biological systems
In this paper, a new theoretical model for understanding the forming mechanism of pigmentation patterns has been proposed. It is found that a non-linearly coupled Turing system can exhibit complex patterns with more than one wavelength. Depending on the control parameters, three kinds of complex pigmentation including super-stripe, super-hexagon, and mixed pattern can be well understood.
