Simulation of Cutting Tool Geometry Parameters Impact on Residual Stress

The residual stress on workpiece surface has close relation with cutting tool geometry parameters including rake angle and rounded cutting edge radius. The residual stress under different parameter cutting conditions is analyzed by FEM simulation in present paper. It is proved that, in a certain range of rake angle, the tensile residual stress is generated on workpiece surface, which increases with rake angle increase at first and decreases subsequently. The residual stress layer thickness has no obvious relation with rake angle value. The residual stress decreases gradually with rounded cutting edge radius increase, but the depth of residual stress layer thickness becomes larger.
