Integrated model for regulation and utilization of regional ground and surface water in the Shiyang basin, northwestern China

The Shiyang River is one of the most serious basins confronting the severe water scarcity and eco-environmental issues in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province, northwestern China recently, which is of particular importance for regional economic and social development. In this investigation, an integrated model for conjunctive regulation of surface and ground water is hereby developed to solve the problem of overabstracted groundwater resources and irrational development of water resources. With the model we can optimize the water resources with reasonable development, give a full play to the union regulation and control function of the reservoir between surface and subsurface reservoir, improve the using rate of the water resources, and achieve an optimal benefit of society, environment and economy. Simulation results indicate that, optimization of water resource based on regional units can provide insights into plausible utilization of regional water resource, and is greatly beneficial to maintain the balance of local eco-environment and economy development. Applying system dynamics and statistic analysis theory, a system dynamics model was developed to describe the mutual feedback relationship of water resources-society economy-ecology environment system in detail and simulate the trend of coupling system of water resources and society economy to deferent project, and the reasonable allocation scheme is proposed.
