Design and Implementation of A Real-time Capsule Endoscope Image Quality Assessment Method

Ingestible capsule endoscope is increasingly used for the non-invasive diagnosis of various gastrointestinal diseases. In this paper we firstly introduced a novel noreference capsule endoscope image quality assessment method fully implemented on an ultra-low power DSP processor. The method was verified with 500 gastrointestinal capsule endoscope images taken from six subjects. The results indicated that the method was capable of assessing the image qualities in real-time (less than 500 millisecond per frame) for all the available capsule images with considerable assessment accuracies. The averaging power consumption of the DSP processor running our method was estimated to be 14mW at 60MHz clock rate, which suggests the method is already feasible for in-situ application. We believe that our method could serve as the first step towards the low power, autonomous endoscopic capsule design.
