The efficiency of onsite wasterwater system with new filler for the treatment of septic tank effluent
A fortified filler system (FFS) for treating septic tank effluent (STE) is effective. Two reactors were set up. One is a FFS and the other is a traditional soil system as contrast reactor. During seven months running, the soil system was clogged three times, but the FFS never. The removal rate of FFS for CODCr ranged from 80.0 to 92.8%, for ammonium nitrate (NH4 +-N) from 61.8 to 99.0%, for total nitrate (TN) from 66.6 to78.9% and for total phosphorus (TP) from 71.0 to 85.4%. The efficiency of removing pollutants is also high in the traditional system, however, clogging always occurred. So the FFS is the better one for urban fringe not served by centralized wastewater treatment systems.
