Modification of Activated Carbon for Phosphine Adsorption

Experiments were carried out to study the factors influencing modification of activated carbon (AC) and the effect of adsorption of Phosphine (PH3). Impregnated AC was used as a modified adsorbent and its adsorption capacity for PH3 was studied in laboratory. The factors influencing modified AC included the type of adsorbent, the type of impregnant and the concentration of impregnant. The adsorption material was selected from 4 kinds of AC (AC1, AC2, AC3, AC4). Then the AC was impregnated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium nitrate (KNO3) and hexanediol solutions respectively. The results showed the adsorption capability of PH3 was enhanced after impregnating AC with those solutions. The HCl was better modification solution than KNO3 and hexanediol. Moreover, the results demonstrated that AC4 was the optimum adsorptive support, HCl was the optimum impregnant, and 5% (mass fraction) was the optimum concentration of impregnant. The adsorption capability of PH3 after modified with 5% HCl was over 7 times than non-modified AC.
